Caring for your braces

Looking after your braces is a crucial part of your orthodontic journey. At Wilkinson Orthodontics, we want to make sure your teeth stay healthy, clean, and protected throughout treatment - whether you’re wearing metal braces, LightForce™ braces or Invisalign® clear aligners. Here’s everything you need to know to care for your braces like a pro.

Caring for your braces

Eating with braces

Braces add extra nooks and crannies to your smile - so it’s important to adjust your diet to avoid damage. Sticky, crunchy, and hard foods can break brackets or wires, potentially delaying your treatment. We also recommend reducing sugar intake to avoid tooth decay around your braces.

Brushing with braces

Good oral hygiene is essential while wearing braces. Here's a quick step-by-step guide:

Remove elastics Take out your elastics before brushing.

Use the right tools A small soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste work best.

Brush at a 45° angle Use small circles to clean around the brackets and gumline.

Clean between brackets and wires Press firmly enough for bristles to reach under the archwire.

Brush every surface Cover the inside, outside and biting surfaces of every tooth.

Check your work Spit, rinse, and inspect your teeth and brackets in the mirror.

Replace elastics If you're wearing them, pop your elastics back in.

Your orthodontist or hygienist may provide additional personalised advice, so be sure to follow their guidance.

Flossing with braces

Yes, you can and should floss with braces! Flossing helps remove trapped food and plaque from between your teeth and around brackets. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Use Superfloss or interdental brushes if regular floss is tricky
  • Floss at least once per day, ideally before bedtime
  • Be gentle to avoid hurting your gums - especially if you’re new to flossing
  • Try a water flosser if you’re struggling with traditional techniques

Not sure where to start? Ask our team for a flossing demo at your next visit.

Caring for your aligners

If you’re wearing Invisalign® clear aligners, looking after them is just as important. Follow these simple care tips:

  • Rinse your aligners with cold water every time you remove them
  • Clean them with a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap - never hot water
  • Avoid eating or drinking (except water) while wearing them
  • Store them in the protective case when not in use

Clean aligners = a cleaner smile!
